Obediah J. (Obed) Brownlow was born in about 1836 in Franklin County, Georgia. He was the son of John A. and Susan Wimpy Brownlow. He moved, along with his family, in about 1842, to Forsyth County, Georgia, where he married Lucinda Guthrie on March 22, 1854. During the War Between the States he joined Co. D, 4th Tennessee Cavalry, US. He was the only one of his immediate family to fight for the North, and was also the only one to perish during that conflict. After his death his widow married a man named Gravitt.
