George Lester Brownlow (1880-1955)

George Lester Brownlow, son of James Madison and Sarah Elizabeth Brownlow, was born on March 14, 1880, at the family farm in Bartow County. He moved with his family to Aragon in the early 1900's. He married Grace Cornelius Gladden on April 11, 1909. They were the parents of Jewel Judson Brownlow, born July 27, 1910, married Dorsey Edgens and died in 1992; Mattie Elizabeth Brownlow, born July 15, 1915, married Clyde Haney. Mattie died in 2001. Their first house, no longer standing, was next to Prospect Church. There second home, which is still standing, was next to the railroad in what was called "Little New York". In about 1917, Grace passed away. George then married Mellie May East, daughter of William Daniel East and Susan Isabelle Rackley, on April 19, 1924. She was born February 9, 1903, and died February 27, 1988. They were the parents of Heflin Simmons Brownlow, born November 25, 1928, married Marie Maulding, died February 7, 1984. Madison Van Buren Brownlow, born October 20, 1932, married Betty Milhollen, and died March 30, 1991. Sarah Belle Brownlow, born February 7, 1937, married Tom Edwards and Edwin Jackson. George was a very smart man who knew the Bible from front to back. He took a college course in theology but to my knowledge never preached. He would read the newspaper every day and even if you talked to him he would keep on reading till he was done. He kept a journal from 1906 till his death but we only have the ones from 1928-31. The others have disappeared. George was a member of Prospect Baptist Church and a mason. He passed away July 24, 1955, and is buried in Prospect Cemetery between both his wives.
