The State of South Carolina Pendleton District by the Honerable Charles Colecock Esquire, one of the Associate Judges of the State of South Carolina To all to whom these presents shall come, be, been or made known, Greetings. Know ye, that this day, John Brownlow, a citizen of Pendleton District, did appear before me and made oath, that on the 29th day of May 1781, at or near Chatham Court House, North Carolina, he, the said John Brownlow, entered the service of the United States of America as he understood during the (pleasure?) of the Government of the United States, under Joseph Rosser, Capt, of Col Robert Mabane's Regiment in the 2nd Brigade of the N.C. Line. He was in the battle at Lindley's Mill, on Crane Creek of the Haw River, Orange County, North Carolina. He was in the Van Guard and was wounded in three places in the skull, which was broken with a sword by one of the enemy. He was many months unable to do anything, by occassion of his wounds, during the time he laid at his Mothers near Chatham County Court House, N.C. And before he was fit for duty, he received a message from Col. Robert Griffen, whose command he was then under, that his services were no longer required by the United States. After he got able to do business or was fit for duty (as he lay several months, confirmed, the Tories in the battles having left him on the ground for dead) He thought it unnessary to be at any trouble to obtain a discharge as peace was made between the United States and Great Britian before his recovery. This despondant further saith that he has never received any bounty, pay or pension from the United States and from age and infirmity he is unable to labour as heretofore and that his reduced circumstances in life, he stands in need of the assistance of his country for support. mark John X Brownlow In testimony that therefore was sworn to and subscribed before me, this twenty-seventh day of March Amno Domini one thousand eight hundred and nineteen. The State of South Carolina Pendleton District John ??? and Samuel ?Churry? Two of the Commissioners named the commission here to pre??? bring forth ?Seven? agreeable to the ??? in the said commission given ??? which they have proceeded to ??? ??? ??? were brought before me ??? ??? and ??? the claims of John Brownlow of the district and State aforesaid to a pension from the United States. JOHN BROWNLOW On the 29th day of May in the year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and Eighty One I did enter in to of the service of the United States as a Volunteer under the command of captain Joseph ?Rosser? Of Col. Guilfford Dudley regiment, the ??? ??? Chatham Courthouse No. Ca. Against the Torys who were in Orange County No. Ca. Under command of Col.s Hector McNiel and David ?Hammin? (Both notary in said State) the Battle in which I had the misfortune to receive my wounds took place between our party and the aforesaid Torys on the 12th day of September 1781 at a certain place in the said County of Orange Called ?Leidleys? Mill on Cane Creek In the said Battle I received four woundsthree of them on my head all of which broke the skull , and thirteen pieces of the Skull bone larger and smaller were taken from the said wounds ??? ??? the other wound was on my wrist of the left arm which in a good ??? ??? ?? For ??? in a desperate situation with the said wounds and for most of the time was thought past recovery by my FriendsOn account of the wounds in my head I am Frequently rendered by my state of mind unable to attend to my domestic concerns though they are very limited and I have never yet received any compensation for service or any support from Government, though a very poor man , and rendered helpless by other ??? ?? And well meaning old man. He is very poor in consequence of ??? old age, is too ?inferm? To earn his own subsistance. Consequently I ??? him a worthy ??? of public charity. Has often shown mw his scar which were produced by wounds inflected with the sword during the revolutionary war - that he is very old - is very sober honest & industrious - & has always been ??? to of been an in??? soldier during the revolutionary struggle Saml K. This is to certify that I have often ??? the wounds of John Brownlow which he informed were received during the revolutionary war - or rather the scars which are the consequence of those wounds - & that he had been satisfactory wounded ??? having been literaly chopped to ??? with the sword - he is sober honest & industrious - but very poor old and infirmed - And has always been spoken of, since my acquaintance with him, as an excelent soldier & a true whig during the revolutionary war - Wm Anderson ............................................................................................................................................................
