Oliver Johnson Brownlow
Oliver Johnson Brownlow (called Tol)
was born July 08, 1895, in Bartow County,
Georgia. He was the youngest son
of James and Sarah Phillips Brownlow. He married
Ethel Britton on February 10, 1924, in Polk
County, Georgia. They lived at Longstation and at Pineywoods in Polk County. He
was called Tol (pronounced Tawl). I'm not too sure where this came from but he
was a very tall man and it certainly fit him. Uncle Tol and Aunt Ethel had a big
farm in the country where they grew cotton. Many people in the community still
remember toting a cotton sack up the hill to Uncle Tol's fields. Every one
called them Uncle Tol and Aunt Ethel so when I was a small child I didn't really
know that I was kin to her for a long time. They attended Prospect Church and I
can still see her sitting in the front row, on the left, where she always sat.
He died on April 04, 1960, of some type of bone disease and Aunt Ethel died
on January 26, 1997. They are both buried at Prospect Church Cemetery,
Polk County, Georgia. They were the parents of two children, Oliver Retho
Brownlow, who died in the service, and a daughter who is still living.
